Motorola Edge 20 Pro — Review & Full Phone Specifications

The Motorola Edge 20 Pro the headliner of this year’s Edge series unlike other Moto’s this one comes at a premium price so does it have the premium features to match let’s find out in our full review. The Moto Edge 20 Pro brings a curved tapered back design which is pretty typical for a smartphone these days this is opposed to the regular Moto Edge 20 which is flat and angular while there is a version available with an eco leather back our midnight blue variant has a gorilla glass 5 back panel the finish is matte yet reflective when it catches light the frame is made of resin coated aluminum and overall the phone is rather grippy and comfortable

Moto phones there’s water resistant coating on the internals but this isn’t ip rated so you should still be careful the Edge 20 Pro’s display is flat not curved like last year’s model and it brings some impressive specs just like the non-Pro version you get a 6.7 inch oled panel with a 1080p resolution gorilla glass 5 protection and a super fast 144hz refresh rate this is faster than most competitors and means that swiping and scrolling on this screen looks extra fluid the refresh rate isn’t adaptive in this 144hz mode though it’s locked in and won’t dial down to save energy if you want to do that there’s an adaptive option in settings but the rate goes up only to a maximum of 120 hertz

that’s still pretty fast though also 120 hertz is the limit on the Edge 20 Pro for high frame rate gaming with supported games the quality of this screen is quite nice you get deep oled blacks as well as support for 10 bit color and hdr 10 plus color accuracy can be quite good depending on the color mode you choose and while we’ve seen higher max brightness from competitors it’s still good enough here for comfortable outdoor use we measured a maximum of 480 nits with a slider and up to 670 nits in auto mode when in bright conditions one aspect in which the Moto Edge 20 Pro seems to fall behind the competition is audio

you don’t get stereo speakers here just a single bottom firing one it earned just an average score on our loudness charts and quality is about average as well and there’s also no headphone jack so you need to use an adapter to plug in regular headphones for biometrics the Edge 20 Pro has a side mounted fingerprint reader which doubles as the power button is quite responsive though we feel is placed a little bit too high speaking of buttons that are hard to reach there’s one on the other side and is dedicated to summoning the google assistant

Specifications of the Motorola Edge 20 Pro

it’s a big stretch but unless you are a fan you probably wouldn’t need it that much anyway and for storage you can get 128 or 256 gigs on board but that’s it it isn’t expandable the interface of the Edge 20 Pro is a pretty stock android 11 with some proprietary Moto functions on top these are for the most part all showcased in the Moto app they include things like personalizations and gesture shortcuts one useful feature is peak display it shows you the time and notifications if you touch or lift the phone and there’s ready four Moto launched the platform this year and it allows you to connect the phone to a tv monitor or even a pc

if you’re familiar with samsung’s decks is similar to that and is handy for casting media playing games on a big screen video chatting or multitasking behind all these features is a high performance chipset a snapdragon 870 built on a seven nanometer process we’ve seen this one quite a bit recently in so-called flagship killer phones and it’s a heavy hitter providing performance just shy of the highest tier flagships both in everyday tasks and gaming we did notice some thermal throttling from the Edge 20 Pro though which you might need to keep in mind if you’re a hardcore gamer on to battery life the Moto Edge 20 Pro has a 4500 mAh battery and earned an endurance rating of 112 hours in our proprietary battery tests that’s a great result for this capacity and a clear upgrade over the non-Pro model there’s support for 30 watt fast charging and the adapter comes in the box with it we charge the phone from zero to 53 in half an hour which is quite decent but nothing too exciting these days

now let’s talk about the cameras which are largely the same as on the non-Pro version except that here the telephotoPro camera is a periscope one with a higher zoom level there are three cameras in total a 108 megapixel nine and one main cam a 16 megapixel ultra wide camera with autofocus and that eight megapixel periscope telephoto cam with five times optical zoom and ois during the day 12 megapixel photos from the main cam are generally good but we’ve seen better at this price you get a good amount of detail with natural rendition but there are some local areas of softness visible from time to time the colors are lively and dynamic range is good

but not as wide as we’ve come to expect portraits are taken with the main camera and they’re pretty great there’s excellent Edge detection in most scenarios and the defocus backgrounds look quite nice five times zoom photos from the telephoto cam also come out at 12 megapixels which means that they’re upscaled from eight there doesn’t seem to be much loss in quality from the upscaling though they have good fine detail and are nice in quality overall but the colors don’t quite match the main cams continuing with the quirkiness of Moto’s camera app photos from the ultra wide cam are downscaled from 16 megapixels to 12.

Camera Features of the Motorola Edge 20 Pro

Camera have a good level of detail for this sort of cam high contrast and ok dynamic range and the color rendition does match the main cams here since the ultra wide has autofocus it supports the shooting of macro close-ups these aren’t bad with lively colors and good dynamic range the dtl level is decent but not what you’d expect at 16 megapixels because there’s cropping and upscaling involved here at night the main camera Produces well-exposed images with good dynamic range dtl is good overall and so is the noise performance we did notice that in several scenes auto hdr was indecisive sometimes engaging and sometimes not we prefer the hdr ones so it may be a good idea to force hdr on for low light photos there is a night mode called night vision and it boosts shadows and rains in the highlights

the downside is that you get heavy sharpening and some loss in fine detail the zoom lens has a hard time at night as expected the shots are soft and underexposed and dynamic range leaves more to be desired and there’s no night mode support here you also don’t get a night mode on theultra wide cam these photos are soft with limited dynamic range we noticed focus hunting with this camera after dark selfies are captured in 8 megapixels by default and they are great there’s good detail appealing colors and wide dynamic range unlike the vanilla Moto h20 the pro version can record video in 8k with its main camera these clips come out significantly cropped

but quality is good and you get lively colors and excellent dynamic range 4k video is decent too there’s still plenty of detail and little noise and dynamic range is still good though you may see a clipped highlight from time to time and the colors are a bit cooler than those in the 8k clips videos from the telephoto cam come out in 1080p and the quality is solid here with good detail and pleasing colors pretty much the same can be said for the ultra wide cam and dynamic range is pretty wide for an ultrawide electronic stabilization works on all three cameras and up to 4k resolution it does a great job in smoothing out your walking or pants so that’s the Motorola Edge 20 Pro there’s a sleek and premium design and an excellent high refresh rate oled display

battery life is great and you get a powerful chipset and good performance from the cameras too at least during the day there are some drawbacks to consider though you get just a single bottom firing speaker and it’s nothing great and we wish there was night mode support for the zoom and the wide cameras if these things don’t bother you though the Moto Edge 20 Pro is a solid recommendation while it doesn’t come cheap it offers performance display and camera chops that can hold up against even more expensive phones.
